Bj 644, Birka violett & Light blue glas

This replica is inspired by a unique glass artifact discovered in grave Bj 644 in Birka, located in Adelsö parish, Uppland. The original was unearthed by archaeologist Hjalmar Stolpe during his excavations in 1878 and is a remarkable example of viking age craftsmanship.

The tumbler features a rounded body, a distinct shoulder, a narrow neck, and a flared rim. The body is made of transparent, very light blue glass, while the neck and rim display a darker, violet tone. To replicate the original’s unique aesthetic, our reproduction incorporates a meticulous process of fusing two separate glass masses—one clear and one violet. This complex technique not only mirrors the distinct color transition of the original but also ensures a level of craftsmanship of the highest quality.

With its design and style rooted in Carolingian workshops of Western Europe, this replica pays tribute to the luxurious goods traded along the extensive trade route and the exquisite artistry found in Birka’s graves.
